Biography Evi De Jean
Evi De Jean, Flemish singer, actress, writer and theatre maker, was born in 1980 on Bermuda, lived in Israël for a few years during her childhood, lived in Antwerp during her teens and is now living in the heart of Amsterdam. She finished her studies ‘musical-theatre’ at the Fontys Academy in Tilburg, The Netherlands in 2003, her acting course in Guildford, London UK in 1999, her studies ‘singing’ and ‘theatre making’ at the Fontys Conservatory in Tilburg, The Netherlands in 2005.
‘Evi De Jean is a new Grand Dame in the theatre world and she sings right into your heart!’ The press and the public talk and write enthusiasticly about Evi’s two autobiographical theatre shows ‘Overleven’ (‘About Living’ 2006-2009) and ‘Aarde’ (‘Earth’ 2009-2010). In 2010 Evi won the prize of the public at the prestigious ‘Concours de la Chanson 2010’ in The Netherlands.
Evi and her brand new team are currently writing Evi’s new musicaltheatre play ‘Melody of a traveler’ (Melodie van een reiziger) which will have it’s opening night in the fall of 2011 in The Netherlands. More about this play on this website or through e-mail.
This summer she will perform ‘Ornamente für Kate Kühl’ at the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam with music of Boris Blacher and Kurt Weill.
From 2009 till 2011 her show ‘Earth’ toured along theatres in The Netherlands and Belgium. About the real journey that lead to the play, Coen Bouman made a documentary that came out on dvd. Evi also recorded a cd with her songs and her shows are available on dvd.
Next to her own shows, which Evi writes herself together with her composers, she is also active as a singing teacher, a theatre director and as a performer in theatre plays and musicals. For example the rol of Begbick in ‘Mahagonny’ (Brecht/Weill 2007), Katy in ‘Joe’ (M-Lab 2008), Carmen in ‘Carmen’ (Bizet 2009), in ‘A Dog’s Heart’ (Raskatov/Bulgakov 2010), in ‘De Bankruptcy Jazz’ (Jazz from Berlin in the 1920’s and poëms from the Belgian poët Paul van Ostaijen) and ‘Nachtvogel’ (‘Nightbird’ 2010-2011), a new play Evi wrote in Berlin and which she played with ‘Wouter van Bemmel’s Jazzband’.
In 2008, 2009 and 2010 Evi sang concerts at the ‘Sumud Festival’ in Betlehem, Palestine. For these concerts she wrote the theme songs and sang in Englisch, Dutch, Arab and Hebrew. In 2010 Evi sang a concert in Amman, Jordan. At the Vennice Biënnale in 2009, Evi sang French, English, Italian and Dutch songs. In 2010 she performed at the ‘Storytelling week Israël and Palestine’ in Amsterdam.
